AUTO REPAIR & MAINTENANCE BLOG

AUTO REPAIR & MAINTENANCE BLOG, Thousand Oaks, CA

Maintaining your vehicle at home is a satisfying way to keep your motoring costs down. With the right knowledge and products even someone who isn't very mechanically inclined can take care of many of the smaller issues in everyday driving. Sometimes, however, car issues can be too specialized or complex for the average motorist to take care of by themselves and it becomes time to take your car to the pros. Below you'll find three major warning signs that you need to get to a mechanic ASAP, as well as some of the potential causes behind them.

Engine and Drivetrain Problems

Let's start at the beginning. If your car won't even turn over and start up, then the rest of the problems on this list won't come into play. The simplest cause of this issue is a dead battery, which you can remedy with jumper cables, and the instructions that come printed on their packaging. If jumping the car doesn't work, you may have a larger problem with your ignition system. It's advisable to take your car into the shop at this point because finding the root of the problem will likely involve removing a few parts from your engine. Whether it's dead spark plugs or electrical problems, it's better to have it dealt with by a professional. Likewise, engine surging where the revs rise and fall can mean a problem with your fuel injectors, which are fairly deep within your motor. It's unwise to drive around with a surging engine, as this burns more gas and can cause unintended acceleration. Drivetrain issues are another major issue requiring professional attention. Everybody fears the dreaded transmission repairs, so if certain gears won't engage or they shift at the wrong times you should definitely take your car to the qualified mechanics here at Tyler's Auto Repair.

Vibration While Driving

This issue can be caused by damaged drivetrain components, but can also stem from misaligned wheels or unbalanced or flat tires. If you feel any vibration or shuddering as you drive along, you should get to a mechanic as soon as you can. At its worst, this issue can lessen your control over the car, potentially causing accidents. This will also wear out your tires more quickly than if everything was straight and true. Unwanted vibrations put stress on important (and costly) components like suspension and brakes while decreasing gas mileage, so it's smart to take your car in as soon as these issues develop.

Poor Braking Performance

Your brakes are vital to keeping you safe on the road and should definitely be cared for by a professional, unless you're absolutely sure you know what you're doing. Common signs of issues with your car's braking system include squeaking or squealing when the brakes are applied, or the brakes feeling spongy and failing to slow your vehicle properly. Squealing brakes are caused by the brake pads wearing through the pad surface to the metal underneath. At this point the metal behind your brake pad is coming into contact with the brake rotor. This can be disastrous and produce unwanted heat, reduced stopping power, and cause you to have to buy new rotors as well as the relatively cheap pads. Spongey and weak brakes can mean there's a problem with your master cylinder, which converts the mechanical pressure of you pressing the pedal into hydraulic pressure to apply the brakes. In either case, it's best to have your brakes seen to by the professional mechanics here at Tyler's Auto Repair.

There are instances where car maintenance is simple and easy, but if you notice any of these issues developing, it's best to take your car in for a qualified mechanic's checkup so the problems can be remedied before they turn into much more serious issues. Tyler's Auto Repair has the tools and expertise to have you safely back on the road in no time at all.

What Our Customers Are Saying

Best repair shop in town. Gary diagnosed the problem in 5 minutes. Dealership told me I would have to leave the vehicle for 3 hours. The dealership's high pressure Service Manager telling me it would probably be $800-$900. Tyler's fixed the simple problem for only $229!! Runs perfect now! Thanks Gary! I would give them a DEFINITE recommend!

Three words: efficient, dedicated and affordable. Tyler's Auto is at the end of the cul-de-sac. The Mechanic had a great diagnostic approach to resolving my car issues. He test drove it at least 5 times until he felt all the issues were addressed and the tweaks were made. Just needed new spark plugs, I was done in 2 hours. I'll go back to them.

I went and got a smog done on my car and failed at another shop. They tried to get me to bring my car in the very next day for the necessary repairs which they said would cost over 400.00 plus dollars. I called a couple of other smog places to find out what I could do, they advised me to take the car to a smog technician for a diagnostic test to find out why it could have failed. Tyler's Automotive performed my diagnostic test. They were very thorough and found nothing wrong with my car. They referred me to a smog test only center, where my car passed with flying colors. Thank you Tyler for giving me such great service and saving me from a huge car repair bill. I have found my new go to guy for any future repair issues.

Gary and crew are the best! They are honest, hard-working, and really nice. Half the time I go in not knowing at all what is wrong, trying my best to describe what is happening through absurd noises like "eeeeek". And they always find the problem and fix it quickly. The last time I went in, they said I needed a new something or other but instead of ordering a new one and installing it which would have been $300, he said first he was going to try taking apart and cleaning my old one. That fixed the problem and he didn't even charge me for it. Such great guys.

Tyler's Auto has provided us with excellent service for our Chrysler and Cadillac over the last three years. We went to to them when we first moved to the area and they have been so great to work with the whole time. Now we are relocating again and it will be sad to leave such great, dependable, fair and just nice mechanics. We highly recommend them!!!

Tyler's is great! Super honest service! They always give you all the facts and you know exactly what you're paying for. Used to go to dealer and pay three times as much. Not anymore since I found Tyler's!

I love this place. These guys are so honest! It's daunting to find a good mechanic and often times I've felt that my lack of knowledge about cars has set me up to get ripped off...that will absolutely NOT happen here. Good, honest work for a very fair price! Love them!

Tyler's is very honest and pragmatic about what needs to be done vs what is optional. We've been taking our Honda and Toyota there for years. Much more honest than the dealers, and good quality.

I was having trouble with AC on my truck. Several places "recharged" the system but would stop making cold air after a few weeks. A friend recommended Tyler's so I went there about a month ago. They did a great job, fixed the AC system and no trouble since. Very fair price as well. Nice, courteous team. Called back when they said they would. Give them a try.

Great guys, years of experience, they know exactly what they're doing. Brothers Gary and Dave run the place and have been helping me with any issues on my car for years. They do anything from diagnosing an odd sound, to complete engine replacements. I always recommend them to anyone in need.
